What is a LAN cable used for

A LAN cable is a wire connection used to connect devices in a local area network (LAN). This cable directly connects to the computer and router to get internet access. A LAN cable provides a path for data transfer in a fast way from one place to another.

We face a low-latency connection whenever we connect our laptop to a cable instead of wireless. A LAN is preferred during big file transfers and gaming. Wireless networks are flexible, but with the interference of walls, the internet becomes slow. A LAN cable is safe from such problems.

There are many kinds of LAN cables in the market, such as Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6a, and Cat7. Cat6 is mostly used for fast internet because it provides strong bandwidth and signals.

The length is another component of a LAN cable. With long cables, signals get weak, and it is better to keep them at a suitable place.

How Does a LAN Cable Work?

LAN cable work seems simple, but it transfers data in a fast and accurate way. The cable has copper wire that transfers electrical signals to other devices. Whenever our computer or router sends data, it transfers the data into 0s and 1s. These hints travel through copper cable and reach other devices.

Within a moment, these signals transfer in a fast way. These signals are transferred into digital data, and this process is called data transmission. Twisted pairs make sure that there is no interference in signals. Meanwhile, a LAN cable works as a bridge between two devices.

Types of LAN Cables

LAN Cable TypeSpeed CapabilityCommon Use
Cat5Up to 100 MbpsBasic home internet
Cat5eUp to 1 GbpsStandard modern homes
Cat6Up to 10 Gbps (short distances)Offices or gaming setups
Cat6a10 Gbps with reduced interferenceHigh-performance networks
Cat7 / Cat8Up to 40 GbpsData centers or enterprise-level systems

Common Uses of a LAN Cable

A LAN cable is the basic need of modern networking. It has become famous in homes, offices, educational institutions, and commercial centers. It is used for a WiFi connection. It is directly used with laptops, computers, and routers.

It keeps the signal stable and fast. The use of LAN cable is in servers and data centers where thousands of gigabytes of data are transferred. LAN cable is preferred in such places because it keeps a continuous and stable connection.

It is suitable for those users who prefer speed and security.

Advantages of Using a LAN Cable

LAN cable is the best choice for those who want fast, stable, and protective internet. It provides a prominent connection despite wireless technology. The Internet does not face any kind of hindrance.

A LAN cable proves fruitful for online gaming. Data is directly sent through a wire. Professional gaming and video conferencing, and live streaming benefit from the LAN cable.

Being a physical cable, it is very difficult to get access to data. Sensitive business information or data is saved. It is not affected by walls or other electric devices at home.

Disadvantages of Using a LAN Cable

We need a physical wire for a LAN connection. We can’t move our devices, such as TVs and computers. This situation is difficult for those users who work more on their laptops or mobiles.

It is difficult and time-consuming to lay cables in large homes. There will be a need to reach the cable on every floor, and the expense will increase. WiFi is easy compared to LAN.

It will scatter everywhere if it is not organized. Scattered cables create a problem in the home and office, and it feels unprofessional.

A LAN cable is effective up to 100 meters. It becomes weak over a long distance. There will be repeaters required to be installed in large factories or homes.

Today is the digital era, and people prefer smartphones and tablets. It is very difficult to connect these devices with a LAN cable. This system proves unsuitable for such modern technology devices.

How to Choose the Right LAN Cable

First of all, check your internet package. If your plan is less than 100 Mbps, Cat5e will be enough for the connection. For up to 1 Gbps, Cat6 or Cat7 is suitable. Always choose the cable that provides you best performance.

Secondly, check your internet load. If you have to browse or watch videos, then Cat5e will be the best. For online gaming, 4K video streaming, or transferring heavy data, you should use Cat6. It will provide you with a fast and stable connection.

Some old computers or networks do not support the new generation cables. It is mandatory to check the router to see whether it is compatible or not.

Shorter cables provide strong signals. Long distance does not have the capacity, and try to save yourself from a long wire. Always buy famous brands of shielded cable so that you can get clear and stable signals.

Maintenance Tips for LAN Cables

You need to take care of your cable after installation. A small mistake can impact your all performance. It is mandatory to take care of it for a long time.

A LAN cable has a thin copper wire that transfers data signals. The inner side wire can break after repeatedly turning.

Always keep the cable away from electrical wires because electrical interference can affect your internet.

In case of multiple LAN cables, always use a clamp. The cable will look clean.

If a cable sheats, then change it. Damaged cables slow the speed, and sometimes they become the reason for signal loss.
